Leidos is in search of a Laboratory Hazardous Materials Manager (LHCM) to support the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) team! The LHCM provides overall management, planning and guidance for the safe use of laboratory hazardous chemicals, radioisotopes, compressed gases and cryogens for science and technical project services (S&TPS). The laboratory hazardous materials manager serves as the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) for laboratories at the three US Antarctic stations, field camps, and research vessels, with the primary responsibility being on-site at McMurdo station during the austral summer, and provides remote support to all locations throughout the year. Deployment to other stations and vessels is possible when feasible.

Deployment to Antarctica will be necessary of this position (approximately 5 months/year). The candidate in the position must complete the physical and dental examinations required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

Due to contract requirements, US Citizenship is required.

Must obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to start date. This process could take up to 4 months.

The anticipated pay range for this role is $75,000 - $95,000 annually, along with a percentage increase during deployment time.

About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF's Office of Polar Program's Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:

• Vision: Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.

• Mission: To provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines. The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

The Challenge:
Austral Summer Deployment to Antarctica Activities (5 months):

• Oversee the USAP laboratory safety, hazardous chemicals, radioisotopes, dry ice, and liquid cryogen use at McMurdo's Crary Science and Engineering Center (CSEC) during the austral summer. Implement the written chemical hygiene program, conduct training, issue and return chemicals, monitor radioisotope laboratories, and perform inspections. Facilitate hazardous waste disposal.

• Prepare and close field camp chemical and radioisotope laboratories.

• Interact daily with grantees, other ASC staff and the National Science Foundation as appropriate.

• Serve as the ASC point of contact for the radioisotope program and liaison with the NSF Occupational Health and Safety Manager.

• Operate the liquid nitrogen plant at McMurdo station and provide oversight for production and filling procedures for storage dewars.

• Provide technical escort services to monitor aircraft overboard vent systems for cryogenic dewars transported by air between Christchurch and McMurdo station if needed.

• Serve as the CSEC point of contact for interactions with Hazardous Cargo, Hazardous Waste, Fire, and Medical departments.

CONUS Responsibilities:

• Review Support Information Packages (SIP) for requested use of laboratory hazardous chemicals, radioisotopes, liquid cryogens, dry ice, and compressed gas cylinders for the upcoming season. Allocate and/or procure materials for CSEC and field camp laboratories. Enter information into the Research Support Package (RSP) documents.

• Provide support to the Planning Team and other S&TPS staff when evaluating proposed research utilizing laboratory chemicals, radioisotopes, compressed gases, and cryogens.

• Provide oversight for the chemical hygiene program across the stations and vessels. Annually review the written chemical hygiene program and records for effectiveness, laboratory safe practices, and radioisotope and cryogen use. Revise and develop new procedures as necessary.

• Provide input to the Annual Program Plan (APP) for the laboratory safety budget for chemicals, cryogen support, equipment, laboratory needs, and lab safety trainings.

What Sets You Apart:

• Bachelor's Degree in science field or engineering, or equivalent.

• Minimum of 3 years' experience working with hazardous chemicals and radioactive isotopes in laboratories, in an industrial, academic or healthcare setting required.

• Knowledge of OSHA's laboratory standard (29 CFR 1910.1450) and experience in laboratory chemical and hazardous waste management preferred.

• Experience writing standard operating procedures and safety documentation required.

• Must be articulate and able to communicate with multiple levels of clients and stakeholders

• Completion of 40-hour HAZWOPER training required.

You May Also Have:

• Experience with cryogens and cryogenic systems preferred.

• Professional certification in hazardous materials management (CHMM), certified safety professional (CSP), or certified nuclear medicine technologist (CNMT) preferred.

• RCRA and DOT training preferred.
